My Dear Freind Barbara....called me last minute to go with her to a very special Naacp Fund Raising Dinner, that will also Honor one of our friends MS Vivian Sanks-King. Vivian was Cheif Councel of The Medical School and Hospital iN NEWARK, and scapegoat when the crap hit the fan, what their billing office did!!! She luckily escape unscathed.. She is a leader int he commmunity in so many ways,.....Naacp,Church and many many community projects...and does such good work, even though, she has had the most incredible hardships...the murder of her son, her daughterinlaw died of cancer...and one of her grandchildren also passed away. Tonight the Naacp community gathered to Honor her..and a few other people...Important leaders in the Community in Essex County.....
The even was held at the Richfield Regency, a catering hall....a marble palace...The Taj Mahal of food in NJ......the home of BAr Mitzvahs and Weddings that just about duplicate Coronations... I joke with Barbara and said we are going to a Blackmitzvah.
The event was a fund raiser...complete with a silent auction and door prizes and gues what.. I won a door prize...a thermos with two cups.....The food was drop dead. The appetizers was a huge "thing" made of filo dough, filled with choped mushrooms,gravy and possible spinach?) It was delicious..as was the brucheta on its side, and a mixed mescalin salald with balsamic vinegar dressing...THIS WAS ENOUGH TO SATISFY ME..... but it was followed by lemon sherbert,serving in a glass flower with mint liquor.....then a prime rib, roasted potaotes, fresh green beans, fresh rye bread, and followed by a chocolate dumbling with whipped cream and a strawberry and a cappuchino with whipped cream. My diet was completely destroyed....
MS Oliver who is speaker of the Assembly in TRenton....second only in power to our new slimy, fat and disgusting Govenor....spoke. She was amazing.....giving statistics how few black people, and even fewr black women have been involved with our government in NJ........a miniscule percentage....And the same goes for involvement in the State Police... She was Articulate and elegant and to the point..
I sat with Barbara, VIvian(who was getting HONORED) and other members of the government, and Corzines ex cheif consul, and his ex policy advisor.....and the First Black president of the NJ BAr assasication (a woman).......WHen the president of the NAACP annouced VIVIANS HONOR..he asked for her freinds and family to stand up. It was an amazing feeling....one of joy ..that is really hard to explain, that I was one of the people who stood up at our table with her.....One of two WHite People in a room with 500 black people....
But let me now rephrase the above. The perception of a life time of viewing discrimination in America, caused me first to think the way I wrote the last paragraph.. You see, it didnt matter what color I was...It didnt matter what color anyone else was... they asked for freinds and family. and I am a friend. Race, Religion, Sexual ORientation... wasnt asked about....FRIENDS and I am a friend...
It was still a very powerful moment...
